The existing pro-independence parties are failing to progress Scotland’s cause. There seems little prospect of them doing so. New Scotland Party aims to provide a way for the independence movement to combine for the purpose of forcing the politicians to think again. This begins with the Manifesto for Independence Petition.
New Scotland Party has stated that we have no plans to stand candidates in the 2026 Holyrood election. We intend to develop the capacity to stand candidates. But we will only do so when we are persuaded that this will directly serve Scotland’s cause.
Political parties can be effective in different ways. Initially, New Scotland Party hopes to expand discourse on the constitutional issue to include perspectives which have hitherto been excluded. We want to change the narrative as a precursor to developing a new and more assertive mindset.
New Scotland Party maintains that to be properly independent Scotland must break ties with the British state as completely as possible. Only then will we be able to freely negotiate new forms of association with England and other nations on the basis of equality of status and mutual respect.
New Scotland Party maintains that it makes no sense to have a referendum of any kind on something which cannot be delivered. Supposing there was a large majority in favour of independence, what happens next? Nothing! Because the Scottish Parliament lacks the legislative competence to restore Scotland’s independence. Power in relation to the constitution is being withheld by the British state. If there is to be a de facto referendum in 2026, it must be on the question of the Scottish Parliament’s power to legislate for a proper constitutional referendum.
